The East Fork of Deep River is the primary source of fluvial inputs to Deep River. The system has 17 stream miles, all of which sits above a levee and bank of five top-hinged tide gates. That levee also holds the County-owned East Deep River Road. In 2018, one of the five culverts collapsed in a sink hold and was filled in, reducing flow capacity by 20%. Flooding of private lands upstream now covers more than 50 acres at a time, for up to 60 days a year. The project will replace the bank of tide gates with a muted tidal regulator that will greatly increase fish access and flow capacity. This is Phase 1 of restoring wild salmon runs to the EF Deep River system.
