DESCRIPTION
Shore Stewards was created in 2002 on Camano Island through grants secured by the Island County Marine Resources Committee (MRC). The program is sponsored by WSU Extension and the MRC. Funding has included grants from WA Dept of Fish and Wildlife, WA Salmon Recovery Funding Board, the Northwest Straits Commission, and Puget Sound Action Team.
The primary goal of the Shore Stewards Program is to educate shoreline residents about how everyday living impacts nearshore ecosystems. This program includes 10 wildlife friendly guidelines including water conservation, septic system maintenance, limiting pesticide and fertilizer usage, managing water runoff, encouraging native plants and trees, knowing permit procedures for shoreline development, bluff maintenance and minimizing shore structures. The program offers information via website, brochures, a monthly newsletter and free workshops.
