DESCRIPTION
In 2012 the City of Gig Harbor removed a 300 LF fish barrier at the mouth of the City's North Creek, (aka Donkey Creek) by removing a 36-inch dia. culvert and replacing it with natural streambed and a bridge at North Harborview Dr. The City's proposed North Creek Culvert Replacement Project is now intended to remove two additional fish barriers. Barrier #1 is an identified barrier at Harborview Dr. (WDFW Site 105 K053021a), which is immediately upstream of the City's 2012 fish barrier removal project. Barrier #2 is associated with an unnamed tributary to North Creek that currently flows more than 450 LF through a series of catch basins and storm pipes but is not identified by WDFW. See the attached North Creek Project Detailed Site Map. Both locations anticipate using the Washington State streamlined process for fish habitat enhancement projects, including replacing the existing fish barriers with natural stream beds. The City anticipates completing a separate feasibility study for these two locations in fall 2022 to provide culvert replacement alternatives, establish a project schedule, and provide conceptual cost estimates. This project proposal is for design and permitting of the City Council's recommended alternative based on the pending feasibility study.
